Phase Oriented Treatment is a steady, reliable course toward healing PTSD.

In the past twenty years we’ve seen the rise of Phase Oriented Treatment approach to support the healing of PTSD. Phase Oriented Treatment was originally written about by Pierre Janet a hundred years ago and is now considered the standard of care for treating PTSD.

Before clinicians realized that treating trauma was different from treating other psychological issues therapists were prone to using more general treatment approaches with trauma. That usually involved people “feeling their feelings” or going into the trauma and memory retrieval. What tended to happen is that people would get worse. Their symptoms would exacerbate.

This becomes even more difficult if you have a complicated history. The more dissociation and attachment issues you have the more easily triggered and symptomatic you can become. With Phase Oriented Treatment of PTSD we see that once a person is steady and stabilized in the here and now they are then able to integrate better the horror and upsets of the past.

Phase-Oriented Treatment

Phase I: Stabilization and symptom reduction
Phase II: Treatment of traumatic memories
Phase III: Integration into everyday life

If you have a single, adult-onset trauma you can generally move quickly from one phase to another. When there’s more complicated trauma, however, that time frame gets expanded.
